When in 2004 I designed a Saddle Pad for my niece's Shetland pony I never thought it would create such interest and result in Shetland Showing Tack.
Like so many, I could not find a saddle that a) fit the pony
b) complement both rider and pony
c) did not slip either around the pony, or up the ponies neck, and
d) helps the rider attain a secure and correct position in the saddle.
A few prototypes later I was confident the Saddle Pad would do the job, look attractive and "look" the part for the Show Ring.
Being a Senior Panel Judge for the Shetland Pony Stud-Book Society, and the National Pony Society I have seen first hand the consequences of ill fitting saddles. Ponies obviously uncomfortable, saddles too narrow , girths too tight, chaffing and rubbing. And the poor jockey either sitting up the withers, or slipping around Shelties portly tummy!
I also truly believe there are very few proper saddles that "sit" correctly on a Shetland Pony. On the whole they are too bulky and sit on top of the pony, with the jockey perched above the ponies ears, with small legs spread eagled due to the width of pony plus saddle. When I see this I always have an image of someone riding an elephant!
The Saddle Pad has been developed to be of simple design, flattering to the pony, showing the ponies shoulder, close fitting, neat, that stays in place.
For the rider, being ALL suede it provides maximum grip regardless of the size of the jockey. Because suede is so pliable it provides very close contact with the pony, and as it has no under panels and therefore no bulk it helps the riders seat and leg positions.
I can add "extras" to individual pads. "D" Rings can be fitted to accommodate daisy reins, side reins, cruppers etc. Discreet removable "handles" can also be fitted for the younger rider to hold ( check before using handles in the show ring as some societies do not allow their use). If you have a special requirement, just ask!
With this new site comes new products for the Ridden Shetland. A range of bridles that fit, small neat stirrup leathers, numnahs for the saddle pads, training equipment including rollers, small elasticated side reins and more.
Please have a look at the "Winners" Page. A gallery of ponies sporting their Saddle Pads, and using them very successfully. A thank you to all the owners for the use of their photographs.
Feedback and ideas are are very welcome, as are pictures of ponies who are using their Saddle pad, especially ponies taking part in activities outside the show ring, such as PC rallies, hunting, gymkhana etc.
